Calibrating Coastal Resilience

Calibrating Coastal Resilience presents a conceptual reimagining of place in the era of climate change. The urban terroir framework introduced by the authors offers a holistic, data-driven approach to assessing vulnerabilities in the built environment and in designing cities. Inspired by the hyperlocal relationships between humans, cultural traditions, and urban and natural contexts, the authors develop a place-based, historically sympathetic methodology for guiding climate-related urban policies, designs, and actions in coastal areas. Coastal communities have been among the first to experience the devastating consequences of the climate crisis. Using case studies from South Florida, the boo...

Cities, Citizenship and Jews in France and the United States, 1905–2022 (Volume 2)

This comparative, transatlantic two-volume work covers nearly 120 years of the history of the rights, integration, and security of the Jewish people in both the United States and France, the countries with the largest and third-largest Jewish populations. Religious freedom and secularism have evolved differently in France and the United States, reinforcing their separate national identities. Yet there are parallels to their Jewish history, and in how the security of Jews has repeatedly defined and tested the national interests of France and the United States in world affairs. Drawing on the author’s personal experience as an international civil servant, these volumes explore topics such as...

Natural Resources and the Environment: Economics, Law, Politics, and Institutions provides a new approach to the study of environmental and natural resource economics. It augments current contributions from the fields of public choice, law, and economics, and the burgeoning field of what used to be called the "New Institutional Economics," to describe, explain, and interpret how these new developments have been applied to better understand the economics of natural resources and the environment. This textbook takes a multi-disciplinary approach, which is essential for understanding complex environmental problems, and examines the issue from not only an economic perspective, but also taking in...

North

In North, Jesse M. Keenan argues that America is on the verge of a great northern climate migration that will likely reshape everything from the urban landscape to electoral politics. First, he provides a conceptual, analytical, and empirical overview of adaptation science with a focus on how and where people are going to live, work, and build communities. Next, Keenan examines the geography of climate migration within the context of broader demographic, housing, and economic trends in America. Not just a collection of scientific observations and projections about America's future in the face of climate change, North explores the dawning of a post-climate era defined by the promise of a more sustainable way of life for those on the move and the peril of those left behind.

Barrier Layers of the Atlantic Warm Pool

The aim of this research is to study the formation mechanism of Barrier Layers (BL) in the western tropical Atlantic and their influence on the tropical Atlantic climate at both short and long timescales. Many Coupled General Circulation Models (CGCMs) tend to overestimate the salinity in the Atlantic warm pool or the Northwestern Tropical Atlantic (NWTA) and underestimate the surface salinity in the subtropical salinity maxima region. Most of these models also suffer from a seasurface temperature (SST) bias in the NWTA region, leading to suggestions that the upper ocean salinity strati cation may need to be improved in order to improve the BL simulations and thus the SST through BL-SST-Inte...
