Conscious Globalism

Conscious Globalism explores today's economic, political, and social conflicts and offers timely, pragmatic solutions. Schwerin probes deeply and finds that an erroneous view of reality - with its corresponding distortions - is the source of most problems. This book draws on the author's 30 years of business experience, a lifelong study of ageless wisdom, and extensive worldwide travel to provide practical tools and models for resolving global conflicts and enriching lives. This is the author's second book.

The Routledge Handbook of Civil Society in Asia is an interdisciplinary resource, covering one of the most dynamically expanding sectors in contemporary Asia. Originally a product of Western thinking, civil society represents a particular set of relationships between the state and either society or the individual. Each culture, however, molds its own version of civil society, reflecting its most important values and traditions. This handbook provides a comprehensive survey of the directions and nuances of civil society, featuring contributions by leading specialists on Asian society from the fields of political science, sociology, anthropology, and other disciplines. Comprising thirty-five e...

Civil Society in Southeast Asia

What is the relevance of civil society to people empowerment, effective governance, and deepening democracy? This book addresses this question by examining the activities and public participation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the areas of religion, ethnicity, gender and the environment. Examples are taken from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. State regimes' attempts to co-opt the concept or reject it as alien to "Asian values" have apparently not turned out as expected. This is evident from the fact that many Southeast Asian citizens are inspired by the civil society concept and now engage in public discourse and participation. The experience of civil society in Southeast Asia shows that its impact -- or lack of impact -- on democratization and democracy depends on a variety of factors not only within civil society itself, but also within the state.

In a Westminster-style first-past-the-post system, the outcome of regular general elec- tions held every five years or so has been the overwhelming dominance of the PAP. [...] In the internet age in which we now live, total control is impossible and also damages the credibility of the regime, unless national security is proven to be at stake. [...] This is how the govern- ment has been held to account for, say, the performance of Temasek Holdings (an in- vestment company managing government assets) and the impact of globalisation on jobs and wages. [...] Citizens are participating actively in the political process and the government is learning to adjust to these trends by engag- ing the people. [...] l Managing diversity in a crowded country Singapore is known for strong government but civil society pressure and the advent of the internet have shown the need for pragmatism and adaptation in meeting the challenges of a multi-racial society, writes Gillian Koh Dr Gillian Koh is Senior Research Fellow, Institute of Policy Studies, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singa.

This highly topical book exposes the tensions between state policies of broadcasting regulation and practices of civil society in the Asian region which is struggling with its incorporation into a new globalised, electronic information and entertainment world. Kitley critically compares Western principles of broadcasting, civil society and cultural regulation with alternative 'Asian' practices of regulation and organisation. Over the past forty years Asian states have used television as a normative cultural force in nation building, but more recently many states have deregulated their television sectors and introduced national commercial and international satellite services. As Asian states wrestle with a perceived loss of cultural control and identity through deregulation, this book considers their viewpoints and the question of whether the television public sphere offers space for the representation of popular sovereignty, and transversal concerns about human rights, press freedom, gender, environmental and world trade issues.

Neutral Beyond the Cold

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the wars in Yugoslavia radically changed the security environment in Europe and Central Asia. Some predictions assumed the emerging unipolarity of the liberal world order would end neutrality policies in East and West, but, as this volume shows, this was not the case. While some traditional Cold War neutrals like Sweden and Finland have been edging closer to security alignment with western institutions, there are others like Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, and Malta that remained committed to their traditional nonaligned foreign policy approaches. More importantly, there are areas of Eurasia that developed new forms of neutrality policies, most of them onl...

The reason is that the Budget takes the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) and Singapore back to the fundamentals of governance on three counts. [...] Employers need to play their part by grasping the opportunities the Government has offered to upgrade their business processes, introduce productivity tools and send their workers for training. [...] The latter accept 'discounts' on their wages because the cost of living for the families they are supporting back home is lower than in Singapore. [...] It is important that, as part of the Singapore system of tripartism, employers prove again that they are willing to fulfil their responsibility to workers and respond positively to the incentives the Government has offered. [...] The Government is correct in its recognition that, after 50 years of sustained high levels of growth, the country is ready to shift to a new paradigm - and aim for more mature rates of growth at a higher base, as befits an 'advanced economy'.
