Marshaling his broad cinematic and cultural knowledge, editor Jan-Christopher Horak has compiled in Lovers of Cinema a groundbreaking group of articles on this neglected film period. With one exception, all are original to this volume, and many are the first to treat comprehensively such early filmmakers as Mary Ellen Bute, Theodore Huff, and Douglass Crockwell. Also included in the book is a listing of all American avant-garde films produced in the years before World War II as well as a bibliography of the most relevant criticism, literature, and news accounts.

Notable Americans of Czechoslovak Ancestry in Arts and Letters and in Education
As pointed out in my last two publications, no comprehensive study has been undertaken about the American Learned Men and Women with Czechoslovak roots. The aim of this work is to correct this glaring deficiency, with the focus on immigration from the period of mass migration and beyond, irrespective whether they were born in their European ancestral homes or whether they have descended from them. Whereas in the two mentioned monographs, the emphasis has been on scholars and social and natural scientists; and men and women in medicine, applied sciences and engineering, respectively, the present compendium deals with notable Americans of Czechoslovak ancestry in arts and letters, and in education. With respect to women, although most professional fields were closed to them through much of the nineteenth century, the area of arts and letters was opened to them, as noted earlier and as this compendium authenticates.
Adaptation and the Avant-Garde
Adaptations have occurred regularly since the beginning of cinema, but little recognition has been given to avant-garde adaptations of literary or other texts. This compelling study corrects such omissions by detailing the theory and practice of alternative adaptation practices from major avant-garde directors. Avant-Garde films are often relegated to the margins because they challenge our traditional notions of what film form and style can accomplish. Directors who choose to adapt previous material run the risk of severe critical dismay; making films that are highly subjective interpretations or representations of existing texts takes courage and foresight. An avant-garde adaptation provokes spectators by making them re-think what they know about film itself, just as much as the previous source material. Adaptation and the Avant-Garde examines films by Peter Greenaway, Jean-Luc Godard, Guy Maddin, Jan Svankmajer and many others, offering illuminating insights and making us reconsider the nature of adaptation, appropriation, borrowing, and the re-imagining of previous sources.
The German Cinema Book
This comprehensively revised, updated and significantly extended edition introduces German film history from its beginnings to the present day, covering key periods and movements including early and silent cinema, Weimar cinema, Nazi cinema, the New German Cinema, the Berlin School, the cinema of migration, and moving images in the digital era. Contributions by leading international scholars are grouped into sections that focus on genre; stars; authorship; film production, distribution and exhibition; theory and politics, including women's and queer cinema; and transnational connections. Spotlight articles within each section offer key case studies, including of individual films that illuminate larger histories (Heimat, Downfall, The Lives of Others, The Edge of Heaven and many more); stars from Ossi Oswalda and Hans Albers, to Hanna Schygulla and Nina Hoss; directors including F.W. The volume provides a methodological template for the study of a national cinema in a transnational horizon.

MAKING IMAGES MOVE
In Making Images Move, Jan-Christopher Horak looks at the work of eight European and American photographers whose films illustrate the gradual fragmentation of realistic narratives during the last eighty years. In close analyses of specific works, he shows how the visions of early practitioners such as Paul Strand and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, who tried to create meaningful political statements using modernist techniques, gave way to the more personal - though no less socially conscious - creations of 1960s and 1970s filmmakers such as Chris Marker, Robert Frank, and Danny Lyon. Even documentary became more subjective, with Helen Levitt pioneering the use of the handheld camera and intuitive editing in her 1946 film, In the Street. Horak argues that photographers who have ventured into filmmaking, while fruitfully exploiting the differences between the two genres, often have been able to retain both their technical styles and complex thematic concerns. Including a filmography of more than 130 photographer-filmmakers, Making Images Move illuminates the instrumental role of these artists in the evolution of experimental cinema.

Reverberations
The contributions in this volume address the ways the two imagined (cultural) spaces commonly designed as 'Central Europe' and 'North America' have mutually attributed meanings to each other and set out to trace patterns and structures resulting from this process. Rather than concentrate on what happens when cultural forms and practices travel across the Atlantic the focus lies on the contexts of their insertion into the 'other' culture. The articles draw attention to how those complexities and contradictions are resolved on an ideological basis in order to produce the kind of stability that is the hallmark of geo-cultural place signification, but also, conversely, the revenge of a spatialized history, the reassertion of their temporality that cultural practices produce when they reverberate in displacement.
