Explosivity

How explosions across history reveal the violence embedded in San Francisco’s landscape Offering a novel approach to contemporary landscape studies, Explosivity unearths the hidden legacies of violence that have shaped the physical and cultural environment of the San Francisco Bay area. As he sifts through the historical debris of previous centuries, Javier Arbona-Homar analyzes a series of explosions that took place between 1866 and 2011 to call attention to the scattered remnants of militarism and racialized capitalism embedded in the region’s geography. From incidents involving nineteenth-century explosives manufacturing and World War II munitions loading to radical activism and conte...

Demilitarizing the Future draws from art, anthropology, and activism to investigate the entrenchment of militarism in everyday lives and to consider novel imaginaries of its dissolution. The pieces collected in this anthology track across military training camps in the United States, the tenements of Palestine, and other sites in the global networks of warfare and military preparedness to consider the pathways by which more equitable futures might be envisioned and sustained. Representing fields from anthropology to poetry and from literary studies to community organizing, the authors together weave a multidisciplinary collection of creative scholarship. Rather than presuming that the afterm...

Parting Gifts of Empire

Parting Gifts of Empire narrates an untold story of how Arabs and South Asians in the twentieth century sought to decolonize their minds. The histories of Palestine and India--both partitioned by the British Empire--were intimately linked. In the face of the same imperially created chasm, intellectuals in Africa and Asia reinvigorated centuries of shared histories to forge new horizons, new solidarities, new institutions, and new fields of knowledge. In this book, Esmat Elhalaby traces the forgotten lives of scholars like Wadi' al-Bustani, revisits Arab and Indian feminist meetings, highlights gatherings such as Delhi's 1947 Asian Relations Conference, and argues for the centrality of Palestine to the rise of Third Worldism. This book breaks new ground to unfold a global intellectual history of anticolonialism, Asian unity, pan-Islamism, and nonalignment in the making of what became known as the Global South.

The Routledge Handbook of Architecture, Urban Space and Politics, Volume II

Architecture and the urban are connected to challenges around violence, security, race and ideology, spectacle and data. The first volume of this handbook extensively explored these oppressive roles. This second volume illustrates that escaping the corporatized and bureaucratized orders of power, techno-managerial and consumer-oriented capitalist economic models is more urgent and necessary than ever before. Herein lies the political role of architecture and urban space, including the ways through which they can be transformed and alternative political realities constituted. The volume explores the methods and spatial practices required to activate the political dimension and the possibility...

An architecture school celebrates its 10th anniversary by publishing representative student work, but concerned with how readers often fail to acknowledge and ultimately disregard the relevance of student ideas, reducing them to mere image-making. Instead of listing projects by type or name, it was decided they would be presented in question format (bilingually), underlining the importance of inquiry over image. Question entries numbered from 1 to 100 (grouped by theme) predetermined the books format. Elegance (it is about architecture) and informality (but also about students) had to be conveyed simultaneously. Students provided unedited text and all images.
