Heart Rate Variability: Clinical Applications and Interaction between HRV and Heart Rate

Over the last decades, assessment of heart rate variability (HRV) has increased in various fields of research. HRV describes changes in heartbeat intervals, which are caused by autonomic neural regulation, i.e. by the interplay of the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems. The most frequent application of HRV is connected to cardiological issues, most importantly to the monitoring of post-myocardial infarction patients and the prediction of sudden cardiac death. Analysis of HRV is also frequently applied in relation to diabetes, renal failure, neurological and psychiatric conditions, sleep disorders, psychological phenomena such as stress, as well as drug and addiction research...

The Munich-based Carl Hanser Verlag was one of the most important publishers in the 1950s and 1960s when it came to promoting Polish literature in West Germany. The fact that – from the 1950s onwards (after a period of German classics' editions) – the Hanser Verlag focused also on Polish literature seems to be baffling. However, this decision was all the more important, because Polish literature in translation often built bridges to Poland's neighbors after the end of World War II and paved the way for a new phase in the German-Polish dialogue aimed at reconciliation. This publishing policy was maintained over the following decades. Daniel Pietrek analyzes and describes this unique cultural transfer in his study.

Polish Camp Literature

Polish Camp Literature expands the boundaries of Polish camp literature, which has so far been defined too narrowly. This restricted outlook has been determined by politics, ideology, the scarcity of historical knowledge, the lack of literary research, and frequent manipulation concerning terms such as "concentration camp", "forced labor camp", and "death camp". Camp literature was initially limited to "Lager" literature (pertaining to Nazi German camps). Over time, gulag literature (pertaining to Soviet camps) came to be included as well. It turns out that Polish camp literature is much more extensive and richer. This volume consists of mini-monographs on Polish literary works concerning ei...
