This volume is dedicated to Professor Hans Renders, founder of the Biography Institute of the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. Throughout his academic career, Renders witnessed a reflexive turn in historical research: biographers became more open about the limitations of their sources, and the subjective nature of their selection. Over this same period, however, the availability of digital sources has increased exponentially, which has profound implications for biographical research and the transnational framework used to approach the genre. Through its thirteen thought-provoking essays, this work seeks to make an intervention in Biography Studies by bringing the well-developed reflexive tradition to bear on the pressing challenge of proliferating digitized sources.

“Through Their Eyes…” – Biographical Research in the Digital Age

[PaRDeS : Journal of the Association for Jewish Studies in Germany ; 30] Biographical studies have always been central to the field of history, but the relevance of biographical research seems to have increased in recent years, calling for a deeper analytical study and a critical re-evaluation of the newly developing “biographical turn.” Especially in an increasingly digitized world, including in academia, life stories seem to offer new perspectives through which personal narratives, cultural phenomena, or literary works can be examined, understood, and presented. Furthermore, these sources raise new questions about the interests and perspectives of the author(s), the reliability and sub...

Theory in the "Post" Era

Shortlisted for the AATSEEL 2022 Award for Best Edited Multi-Author Scholarly Volume (AATSEEL is The American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages) Theory in the "Post" Era brings together the work and perspectives of a group of Romanian theorists who discuss the morphings of contemporary theory in what the editors call the “post” era. Since the Cold War's end and especially in the third millennium, theorists have been exploring the aftermath - and sometimes just the “after” - of whole paradigms, the crisis or “passing” of anthropocentrism, the twilight of an entire ontological and cultural “condition,” as well as the corresponding rise of an antagoni...
