An art collector who was a patient at the Amsterdam Medical Center once expressed his gratitude with a donation of several works of art, the seed for the extraordinary modern art collection that now flourishes at the Amsterdam Medical Center. Since it began seriously cultivating its art collection in the 1980s, the Center has amassed approximately 5,000 works by Dutch and Dutch-resident artists. The Amsterdam Medical Center Art Book is an extraordinary showcase of the Center’s rich and diverse collection, which focuses on Dutch art from the 1950s through the 1970s. The book highlights several stunning examples within the collection of such benchmark art movements as CoBrA, Mixed Media Art, Zero Art, and New Figuration. Other fascinating pieces featured in the book were created by artists-in-residence, who were allowed to draw from live scenes in the Center’s operating theater and maternity ward. This volume ultimately presents a fascinating survey of Dutch post-war art, with over 100 vibrant color illustrations that include works by Eugene Brands, Karel Appel, Constant, Marc Mulders, Roy Villevoye, and Marlene Dumas.
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Dutch Republic was one of the main centers of media in Europe. These media included newspapers, pamphlets, news digests, and engravings. Early Modern Media and the News in Europe brings together fifteen articles dealing with this early news industry in relation to politics and society, written by Joop W. Koopmans in recent decades. They demonstrate the important Dutch position within early modern news networks in Europe. Moreover, they address a variety of related themes, such as the supply of news during wars and disasters, the speed of early modern news reports, the layout of early newspapers and the news value of their advertisements, and censorship of books and news media.

As a multimedia artist, Dick Raaymakers (born 1930) embraces a diversity of genres and styles, from sound animations for films to "action music," never-ending vocal textures, electro-acoustic tableaux vivants and music theatre works. Raaijmakers dovetails disciplines such as the visual arts, film, literature and theatre with the universe of music.
Asmat Art features the world renowned woodcarvings of the Asmat, former head-hunters who live in the western half of New Guinea This book presents a full range of Asmat woodcarving art, but emphasizes the rare early shields and figure sculptures. Drums, canoe prowheads and the larger, more dramatic "objects" are also shown. Together with bisj poles, war shields are perhaps the most famous creation of Asmat artists, and these were carved throughout the region. It is in the design and construction of the shields that the variations in style region can most clearly be seen. Figure sculptures, of varying styles, are also well represented here, and a limited number of the huge ceremonial carvings, such as bisj poles and basu suangkus, have also been included. The cultural context in which these items play their part is described in detail in the introductory chapters. But it is not the intention of this book to be an ethnography. The focus is on the art pieces themselves.
The Dutch no longer rule supreme in the world flower market. Since the late eighties, developing countries such as Colombia and Kenya have seized a large - and growing - market share. The Game of the Rose is a report from the frontlines of this new War of the Roses (and Other Cut Flowers). Are Southern growers cornering the market? European growers fear their tropical competitors, and with reason. Yet they also do thriving business with growers in Africa, India and South America. The South pays highly for the services of Northern managers, crop specialists, marketing experts, for Northern plant material and for Northern equipment. Many of the African growers themselves are European. The developing countries furnish the flower trade with cheap labour, with scarce arable land and even scarcer water resources. They expose their populations to carelessly sprayed toxic pesticides. Who profits? The profits from the flower industry are highly uncertain - and are in any case being drained off to the North. Why, then, are Northern development consultants advising governments and entrepreneurs in the South to adopt such a risky and disadvantageous strategy?
