An original, innovative, and timely study on the cultural history of Cyprus under British rule, offering a new interpretative framework for studying the island's colonial past. The book focuses on the often-overlooked cultural dimensions of the island's colonial experience and demonstrates the crucial role culture played in shaping its historical trajectory and future. This is the first volume to explore various aspects of the island's cultural life from 1878, when it transitioned from Ottoman to British rule, until the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960. It features a series of thematic chapters by female authors, focusing on photography, architecture, literature, theatre, art and collecting, cultural policy, advertising, fashion, antiquities and archaeology, public gardens, and sports clubs. Individual chapters bring to light previously unpublished source material in Greek and English, both written and visual, from state and private archives. Music in Cyprus draws its authors from both sides of the divided island to give a rounded picture of musical culture from the beginning of the British colonial period (1878-1960) until today. This book is a collection of articles that reflect on various connectivities between art and social justice and media which are pertinent to studying contemporary societies. How different forms of media and art, in the broadest possible meaning of these terms, reflect on, relate to, and campaign for social justice is an important topic to consider as artists, academics and activists. The subject matter of the book is also contextualized, with attention being paid to historical, cultural and communication factors, and with chapters referencing situations and collaborations in Brazil, Cyprus, Greece and South Africa. This is the first time that such a broad range of contexts are being considered together within the pursuit of studies on art and social justice. Furthermore, this book concentrates on how different art forms are manifest, in relation to social justice issues in an ever-changing world mediated by the Internet. How much mobilization happens online through art and media, and how much happens in â ~realityâ (TM) (offline) are issues explored at length with regard to youth and participation in social change.

Bob Marley and Media: Representation and Audiences presents an analysis of how media, radio, television and print represented Bob Marley, including his popularity after his death. Mike Hajimichael examines unexplored connections between Bob Marley and media representation and the specifics of audiences, including coverage in tabloids, music magazines, and fanzines, as well as radio and television interviews. Hajimichael builds an extensive catalogue of Bob Marley’s media engagements and connects Marley to media through forms of political discourse and ideologies relevant to social change in different contexts globally, such as civil rights, anti-racism, Rastafari, and liberation movements. Given that varieties of representation exist, the book unpacks these media discourses with regard to public perceptions and key themes articulated, including mainstream versus fan-based coverage, issues of Rastafari, Black Consciousness, economic crisis, legacies of colonialism, slavery, racism, links to other music idioms, concepts of identity, and Marley’s personal relationships.
