Images have caused uproar, violence and even casualties in the meeting of religions and cultures during the last years. Iconoclasm and iconolatry are on the agenda once more. Late Modern Culture is dominated by images and is understood in concepts such as aestheticization and symbolisation. Theological debate is likewise performed through images, symbols and rituals rather than through doctrines and beliefs. In this book, authors from various research backgrounds seek to clarify the terms of reference, and explore the diversity and disagreements in their use from a Christian perspective.
Continental Philosophy and Philosophy of Religion
This is the first book that provides access to twelve Continental philosophers and the consequences of their thinking for the philosophy of religion. Basically, in the second half of the twentieth century, it has been treated from within the Anglo- American school of philosophy, which deals mainly with proofs and truths, and questions of faith. God in France
According to some, French philosophy has taken an obvious turn towards/into a theological context. In their work, contemporary philosophers such as Ricoeur, Levinas, Girard, Henry, and even Derrida and Lyotard in their later periods focus on issues usually associated with theological debates. For thinkers like Henry, Marion, and Lacoste, theology even plays a prominent role in their thought. Why this post-Heideggerian turn to God? This book introduces the typically French debate of the so-called 'theological turn of French philosophy' through a presentation of the philosophers mentioned. Why are they all interested in the quest for God and Religion? How do they understand God in a philosophical way? Thinking about these questions offers to both philosophy and theology the opportunity for a crossover which is mutually enriching. This book aims to contribute to this fascinating process.
Living a Good Life in Spite of Evil
The author distinguishes between three models of the good life that are prominent in the Western tradition: the satisfaction-model, the self-actualization-model and the fellowship-model. These three models are subjected to a comparative analysis, in which the key question regarding each of these models is: In what way and to what extent does it help its adherents to cope with experiences of evil and suffering? On the basis of this analysis, the author argues for the untenability of nonrealist views of these models, and constructs his own view of the good life.

Identity and Change in the Christian Tradition
In at least two respects the position of religion and Christianity in the Western world has changed in recent years. Firstly, there is a growing plurality of and pluriformity within religions. And secondly, religions tend to change and develop faster and on a larger scale than they used to. This gives rise to the questions of change and continuity of religious traditions addressed in this volume: What function does the conceptual system or 'language game' of religion fulfil within the context of human thought and life? In what ways and under what circumstances do such conceptual systems require innovative changes in order to remain adequate for fulfilling this function? How are the continuity and change within religious traditions related to these issues? What is the nature of this continuity and of such changes within traditions? What role can theology play in initiating and directing such changes? In answering these questions, most contributions to the present volume focus on the Christian tradition.
