This volume focuses on the interplay between metaphor, making, and mysticism and sheds new light on the power of the metaphorical and creative dimensions of the mystical for the twenty-first century. It explores the ways a variety of mystical writers deal with metaphor and image by bringing together chapters from interdisciplinary vantage points – theological, philosophical, historical, artistic, and literary. The book touches on a range of historical and contemporary figures, including Jalal al-Din al-Rumi, John of Ruusbroec, Hadewijch, John Scottus Eriugena and Edward Abbey. In reviewing the place of metaphor in mystical texts (both Christian and Islamic), the contributions reflect on the hard and difficult places both metaphor and mysticism can bring us to. They explore contemporary artists’ engagement with the mystical and how these open up new ways of reimagining our present – moving us beyond static categories such as religion versus secular and Christianity versus Islam. Overall, the book highlights the potential of mysticism to push us beyond comfortable spaces and associations and considers the language and images used to do so.

This volume contains for the first time in English, Jan Patočka’s seminal essay “The Phenomenology of Afterlife”, as well as contributions surrounding and analyzing this text. In his essay, Patočka reflects on our relation to the dead and on how the departure of a loved one affects our continued existence. The premise of Patočka’s investigation is that our existence always takes place by and through an originary and reciprocal “being for others”. This book uses contemporary film to articulate a philosophical account of raising children. It forms part of a revaluation of the parent as a pedagogical figure, which stands in contrast to the instrumental accounts dominant in contemporary ‘parenting’ culture. Hodgson and Ramaekers use film in order to offer an affirmative account of the experience of raising children, as a presentation of those inevitable aspects and experiences that upbringing is: the initiation into language and the world; the representative nature of the parent; and the maintaining of mundane practices that constitute our shared culture and community. The films which are discussed are taken as grammatical investigations and enable the authors to develop an account of the use of film in education and as educational philosophy, and to respond to each film’s invitation to articulate the existential dimensions of raising children. This book presents the first ecocritical study of novelist, philosopher, poet and public intellectual Iris Murdoch (1919–1999).
