This book offers a new perspective on a long-debated issue: the role of the occult in surrealism, in particular under the leadership of French writer André Breton. Based on thorough source analysis, this study details how our understanding of occultism and esotericism, as well as of their function in Bretonian surrealism, changed significantly over time from the early 1920s to the late 1950s. -Dr Tessel M. Bauduin (1980) is a historian of art and culture. She holds a PhD in the Arts (2012) from the University of Amsterdam, and is currently affiliated with the Radboud University, Nijmegen, as a post-doctoral researcher. Her research interests include the historical avant-garde, especially Surrealism; Modernism and occulture; Modernist medievalism.
Magic and the Occult in Contemporary Poetry
Magic and the Occult in Contemporary Poetry investigates the relationship between poetry and magic in the context of contemporary poetics. It traces the history of ‘magical poetics’ and the poetry of the occult to the present, in order to ask, in the context of contemporary US poetry, what potential there is for a magical poetics, or a poetics of the occult, today. The book argues that a magical or occult poetics offers a vital counterpoint to more mainstream poetic trends. It defines a magical or occult poetics in terms of the willingness of a poet to entertain a magical worldview for the purposes of writing poetry or the willingness to experiment with creative techniques and processes derived from magical or occult practices. It explores the allure of the poet as magician, the conceptualization of language as inherently magical, and the implications of adopting a magical perspective in poetic creation. It also delves into the specific creative techniques and processes central to magical and occult poetics, including the use of spellcraft, trance, divination, and ritual in the composition of poetry.

Design Dispersed
Design Dispersed pursues the complex and heterogeneous connections between migration and design in the 20th and 21st centuries. The edited volume gathers contributions by international researchers and curators on the question of how design practices and (historical) objects articulate, respond to and critically reflect on migration, flight and displacement: Besides a collage which highlights the aesthetic effects resulting from the networking, overlapping and mixing of forms, another strand of the book looks at the political and social dimensions of design. How are design objects material modes of a critical inquiry on movements of people and things? What role do object trajectories play in the émigré movements of the 1930s and 1940s? Other texts follow the question of how migrants and refugees form their experience and political fight for acceptance into design and architectural productions. Many modernist and avant-garde artists and authors were fascinated by the occult movements of their day. This volume explores how Occultism came to shape modernist art, literature, and film. Individual chapters examine the presence and role of Occultism in the work of such modernist luminaries as Rainer Maria Rilke, August Strindberg, W.B. Yeats, Joséphin Péladan and the artist Jan Švankmaier, as well as in avant-garde film, post-war Greek Surrealism, and Scandinavian Retrogardism. Combining the theoretical and methodological foundations of the field of Esotericism Studies with those of Literary Studies, Art History, and Cinema Studies, this volume provides in-depth and nuanced perspectives upon the relationship between Occultism and Modernism in the Western arts from the nineteenth century to the present day.
