Landscape and Nature in Scandinavian Art
This edited volume foregrounds new and vital scholarship shaping Scandinavian art historical research on the representations of the natural world. Contributors deconstruct the interlinking of people and land through critical readings of the Scandinavian representation of nature, bringing to the fore how the traditional focus on the landscape as a manifestation of temperament has tended to obfuscate critical approaches to the representation of the landscape. Making interdisciplinary connections, this volume redresses the imbalance in scholarship on the region that often emphasizes teleological national narratives and instead situates encounters with nature and the landscape in relationship to more interdisciplinary perspectives. Each chapter serves as a specific case study on topics ranging from circumpolar exploration and colonial practices, deconstructing National Romanticism myths, and contemporary artistic responses to the history of the politics of land. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, nature studies, and environmental history.

Majestic and magical landscapes, the soft beauty of fields of flowers, the raw cold of winter: the works of Harald Sohlberg combine a Romantic perception of nature with a contemporary pictorial language akin to Symbolism. This volume assembles some 60 pai ntings, in addition to a number of drawings, prints and photographs by the artist and grants insight into his conceptual world through his correspondence. In particular the mountain world surrounding Rondane National Park provided Harald Sohlberg (1869 - 193 5) with inexhaustible inspiration for countless studies and watercolours which were later incorporated into his landscape pictures. This volume places one of his most famous works, Winter Night in the Mountains , in a new context and casts light on less wel l - known aspects of Sohlberg ' s oeuvre, which also includes street scenes, for example. One characteristic of his works that is particularly attractive is the lack of people in them - not least because their traces always appear present. This reveals a criti cal attitude to the modern age and at the same time allows the viewer to become immersed in his or her own st ories.

The essays collected here, which consider artists from France to Russia and Finland to Greece, argue persuasively that Symbolist approaches to content, form, and subject helped to shape twentieth-century Modernism. Well-known figures such as Kandinsky, Khnopff, Matisse, and Munch are considered alongside lesser-known artists such as Fini, Gyzis, Koen, and Vrubel in order to demonstrate that Symbolist art did not constitute an isolated moment of wild experimentation, but rather an inspirational point of departure for twentieth-century developments.

“Romantik. Journal for the Study of Romanticisms” is a multidisciplinary journal dedicated to the study of romantic-era cultural productions and concepts. The journal promotes innovative research across disciplinary borders. It aims to advance new historical discoveries, forward-looking theoretical insights and cutting-edge methodological approaches. The articles range over the full variety of cultural practices, including the written word, visual arts, history, philosophy, religion, and theatre during the romantic period (c. 1780–1840). But contributions to the discussion of pre- or post-romantic representations are also welcome. Since the romantic era was characterized by an emphasis on the vernacular, the title of journal has been chosen to reflect the Germanic root of the word. But the journal is interested in all European romanticisms – and not least the connections and disconnections between them – hence, the use of the plural in the subtitle. Romantik is a peer-reviewed journal supported by the Nordic Board for Periodicals in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOP-HS).
