Grounding Digitalization

Grounding Digitalization

Digitalization is usually perceived as an invisible process and its cultural embeddedness as well as its material, spatial, and environmental grounding are often neglected. However, digital technologies and transformations are shaped not only by cultural values, practices, and imaginaries, but also by network infrastructures and spatial orders. They consume environmental resources and cause high carbon dioxide emissions and electronic waste. At the same time, these materialities intervene in spaces, thereby reconfiguring socio-spatial arrangements. The contributors to this volume analyze digitalization from a »grounding« perspective that explores involved cultural practices, technologies, materialities, and spaces.

Questioning Planetary Illiberal Geographies

This book engages with current debates on ‘planetary urbanization’ and the nature of urban political theory but notably considers the implications of illiberalism on space, territory, and power. Such a focus is timely, as illiberalism (across various settings and terrains) is producing, and embedded in, increasingly complex, hybrid, multi-scalar, non-linear, and globally networked flows. Through ordinary explorations drawn from diverse empirical case studies (China, the United States, India, South Korea, and Singapore) and via mixed methodologies, the chapters in this volume seek to advance theory that moves beyond assumptions and certainties of what illiberalism is, how and where it ope...

This book examines the vast and largely uncharted world of cultural/creative city-making in Asia. It explores the establishment of policy models and practices against the backdrop of a globalizing world, and considers the dynamic relationship between powerful actors and resources that impact Asian cities. Making Cultural Cities in Asia approaches this dynamic process through the lens of assemblage: how the policy models of cultural/creative cities have been extracted from the flow of ideas, and how re-invented versions have been assembled, territorialized, and exported. This approach reveals a spectrum between globally circulating ideals on the one hand, and the place-based contexts and cont...

Urban Landscapes in High-Density Cities

The positive effects of urban green spaces are well-known, ranging from the promotion of health, support of biodiversity to climate regulation. However, the practical implementation of urban landscapes is less discussed. How can we make these spaces functional, economically feasible and inclusive, especially as cities become more diverse? The publication explores strategies to reconcile the various demands, such as food production, resilience and nature conservation. Indeed, urban landscapes have to be restorative, ecological and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. This is a particular challenge in high-density cities like Singapore, Seoul or New York where space is a scarce commodity. The continuing growth of the worldwide urban population imbues the topic with a special urgency.

Art in Urban Space

  • Categories: Art

This collection grew out of the international conference entitled “Arts and the City” hosted by Károli Gáspár University and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2019. With speakers from across the world, this scholarly event reflected the diversity and deeply interdisciplinary character of contemporary urban studies and its relation to inclusive artistic practices. Thus, this book offers global academic perspectives on the function, relevance and social embeddedness of art in selected European and North-American cities and, as occasional detours, in other parts of the world. The three main sections of the book are entitled “Public Art Considerations”, “War, Travel and Resistance”, and “London: Word, Action and Image”. The collection explores mainly 20th and 21st century urban phenomena, with three chapters exploring city culture in earlier eras. This book will be valuable reading for students, academics, policy makers and anyone with an interest in urban culture, cultural geography, literature, art history and art theory.
