Size Matters – Understanding Monumentality Across Ancient Civilizations
When talking about monuments, size undeniably matters – or does it? But how else can we measure monumentality? Bringing together researchers from various fields such as archaeology, museology, history, sociology, Mesoamerican studies, and art history, this book discusses terminological and methodological approaches in both theoretical contributions and various case studies. While focusing on architectural aspects, this volume also discusses the social meaning of monuments, the role of forced and free labour, as well as textual monumentality. The result is a modern interdisciplinary take on an important concept which is notoriously difficult to define.
The Waxing of the Middle Ages
Johan Huizinga’s much-loved and much-contested Autumn of the Middle Ages, first published in 1919, encouraged an image of the Late French Middle Ages as a flamboyant but empty period of decline and nostalgia. Many studies, particularly literary studies, have challenged Huizinga’s perceptions of individual works or genres. Still, the vision of the Late French and Burgundian Middle Ages as a sad transitional phase between the High Middle Ages and the Renaissance persists. Yet, a series of exceptionally significant cultural developments mark the period. The Waxing of the Middle Ages sets out to provide a rich, complex, and diverse study of these developments and to reassert that late medieval France is crucial in its own right. The collection argues for an approach that views the late medieval period not as an afterthought, or a blind spot, but as a period that is key in understanding the fluidity of time, traditions, culture, and history. Each essay explores some “cultural form,” to borrow Huizinga’s expression, to expose the false divide that has dominated modern scholarship.

This monograph examines the most prestigious political paintings created in Britain during the High Baroque age. It investigates a period characterized by numerous social, political, and religious crises, in the years between the restoration of the Stuart monarchy (1660) and the death of the first British monarch from the House of Hanover (1727). On the basis of hitherto unpublished documents, the book elucidates the creation and reception of nine major commissions that involved the court, private aristocratic patrons, and/or civic institutions. The ground-breaking new interpretations of these works focus on strategies of conflict resolution, the creation of shared cultural memories, processes of cultural translation, the performative context of the murals and the interaction of painted images and architectural spaces.

Masterpieces of the Department of Prints and Drawings
Due to the high artistic quality of its holdings - which encompass some 25,000 drawings and 75,000 prints dating from the late Middle Ages to the present - the Staedel Museum's Department of Prints and Drawings is among the most prominent graphic art collections in Germany. It was founded in the eighteenth century and expanded in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For reasons of conservation, works on paper cannot be displayed on a permanent basis like paintings, but only placed at visitors' disposal for viewing in the department's Study Hall. Comprising eighty superb drawings, this publication spans a period of nearly six hundred years: the oldest drawings depicted date from the early fifteenth century; the most recent were executed in the late twentieth. Nearly all of art history's most renowned draughtsmen are represented, for example: Durer, Raphael, Titian, Rubens, Rembrandt, Watteau, Fragonard, Tiepolo, Cornelius, Delacroix, Daumier, Cezanne, van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Kirchner, Beckmann, Klee and Pollock.

The Germans, the Portuguese and India
" German merchants emerged as influential commercial partners of the Portuguese in the 16th Century. The trade in spices and precious metals was not the only line pursued by them in India, they also collected precious stones and ventured far into the interior of the country. The present study illustrates these activities which have so far not received adequate attention. Moreover, not all of the Germans coming to India were merchants, there were also many soldiers, among them artillerists (bombardeiros) who had skills to offer which had obviously not yet been acquired by the Portuguese military. The news about India which German merchants and soldiers conveyed to their home country contributed to the increase of German knowledge of the world. "
